Information Processing- Major Award (BIPXX)

Course Overview

General Aims

  • To enhance the knowledge and practical skills of those working in the area of information processing in business or community based organisations
  • To develop the confidence and communication skills of participants
  • To enable learners to develop a broad understanding and appreciation of the information processing environment which operates in Ireland
  • To improve learners’ opportunities for advancement within their chosen field

Course Aims

    • Develop candidates’ knowledge of IT hardware and software and their ability to operate equipment correctly and safely
    • Develop candidates’ abilities to select software and hardware components
    • Develop candidates’ ability to manage and manipulate complex documents and data in a variety of applications
    • Develop candidates’ abilities to plan, test and evaluate the use of IT solutions
    • Develop candidates’ abilities to support and assist other IT users
    • Encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills and knowledge that learners will need to undertake further study

    Course Content

    This course is flexible with options of day time and evening classes. Learners can accumulate their credits over the course of one year (or two years in the case of part-time students) depending on their availability. All of these modules are component certificates of the FETAC Major Award BIPXX. Participants will receive a FETAC Minor Award for each module completed.  Credits obtained from EIBS can be used to achieve FETAC and HETAC qualifications at other Colleges.
    In the event of a learner having difficulty completing the course assignments of a particular module the college reserves the right to change the mix of modules, in consultation with the learner, to allow the learner to achieve the Major Award.
    The award is made up of 4 mandatory modules (including the work experience module) plus at least five electives.  A total of nine credits must be obtained to achieve the full award, with the majority of modules counting as one credit.  Currently the College is offering the following mix of modules for this major award:
    Mandatory Modules

    • Database Methods                                         
    • Information Communications Systems
    • Spreadsheet Methods            
    • Work Experience                                           

    One of the following modules

    • Word Processing        
    • Bookkeeping – Manual & Computerised      

    General Studies modules:

    • Communications
    • English as a Second Language

    Assessment

    Modules are assessed in a variety of ways. Work Experience is mandatory for this qualification. There is a practical orientation to the assessment process and methods of assessment include the learner’s collection of work, assignments and work related projects. Examinations are compulsory in some modules.

    Award

    Upon successful completion of the module participants will be awarded a FETAC Level 5 Major Award in Information Processing.

    Entry Requirements

    All formal prior learning completed by the learner will be considered by the College in order to gain credits towards the Advanced Certificate.  Learners must submit a document to the College outlining the courses they have completed with copies of their qualifications.  The College is bound by guidelines issued by FETAC in relation to the area of recognition of prior learning.  Any level 5 FETAC certificate achieved by the learner will count as one credit.  A total of nine credits must be obtained to achieve the full award.

    Duration

    Most modules require 30 hours in the classroom. These hours are broken into nine sessions with three hours in each session. The Work Experience Module will be combined with the Communications Module and will be given 40 classroom hours. .
