English as a Second Language (E20164)

Course Overview

The course is designed for those who wish to improve their ability to communicate in English.  Participants are tested to determine their current level and then streamed into a programme that is matched to their level.  Learners will have the opportunity to develop their general speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, however the overall focus is the typical English that they will require to operate effectively and efficiently in the workplace.  There is a level of flexibility within the course to allow for the particular language requirements of a nominated work environment.

Course Content

The content of the course is structured to suit the language level of the learner and their employment background. The typical language used and required in the learner’s current workplace is incorporated into the overall learner outcomes. In general participants will develop their ability to use English effectively for practical communication, vocational and social purposes. This includes giving personal information in spoken and written circumstances, expressing and enquiring about attitudes and beliefs and explaining workplace situations.

Assessment

In order to successfully complete the module participants will be required to submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates their overall knowledge and pass an oral and written exam.

Award

Depending on the language level of the learner successful participants will be awarded a Level 3, Level 4, or a Level 5 FETAC Certificate in English.

Entry Requirements

Participants can take Level 3 as beginners in English. To study for Level 4 they need A2 and for Level 5 they need B1 on the Common European Framework.

Duration

The course will be held over 30 weeks and will take 45 hours in total including examinations. Each class will last for one and a half hours.
